But what makes Duncan, his colleague Ed and the rest of his Box tick? We caught up with him recently and had a chat.
1) Why Spartan? The first time I met you, you were already wearing a Spartan shirt and living the Spartan way, so it’s clearly important to you. What was your first race?
I love Spartan Race. My first race was in Cambridge around four years ago. I came 7th, so I was really pleased with that. I genuinely love the races and think they are a true test for what we do in Crossfit.
2) How did you hear about Spartan Race and did it flick a switch in your mind? Were you already doing Crossfit, or did it inspire you to start it?
My first race was before I got into Crossfit and set up my own box Crossfit Stags and Does. I love the challenge of a Reebok Spartan Race and have done a Beast a couple of years ago and also 2 more Sprints. Last year I came 6th in the Cambridge Spartan Race held in Milton country park which is walking distance from our Box. I have watched Reebok Spartan Race develop and this was the best one so far, I really enjoyed all the swimming involved.
3) How does Stags and Does fit into that? What kind of ethos do you like to put across? Do you take beginners too?
What we do at Stags And Does will be perfect for any aspiring Spartan, We teach rope climbing, box jumping , pull ups, and a lot more. I completed all the challenges at the Spartan event and that’s actually where I caught most of the other athletes, particularly on the stone carry which our training makes easy. If someone is looking to do a Reebok Spartan Race, 6 weeks with us before would be perfect.
The Spartan event suits what we coach well, as it is a 5km race so effectively a series of sprints between obstacles which is what we train for.
4) Will Stags And Does put a team togther for the Elton Hall race, or will you run for time? Perhaps both?
Yes we will definitely put a team together, my goal is to one day win one. I did win one Zombie race in 2013, but its not as competitive as a Spartan.
5) If someone is intimidated by Spartan Race, what would you tell them?
Then they need to do a Spartan event. All the exercises are achievable and you will feel an enormous sense of achievement and camaraderie afterwards, particularly if you were intimidated to start with.
Duncan is offering a tutorial session for how to climb ropes before the Cambridge race, so please get in touch with them via the Facebook page here.
